How to use industrial Ethernet encoder to accurately measure speed? In the use of encoders, angle or linear distance measurement is an important aspect, it can also be used for speed or linear velocity measurement. When the industrial Ethernet encoder rotates faster, the pulse frequency increases at the same rate.


The measuring speed of the encoder can be determined by two methods: pulse counting or pulse timing.


Incremental encoders usually output signals on two channels-usually called "A" and "B", and the two channels are offset by 90 degrees. The direction of rotation can be determined by the previous channel. In general, channel a is in front and the direction is clockwise, and channel b is in front and the direction is counterclockwise. Quadrature output also allows the resolution of the encoder to be improved by using X2 or X4 decoding techniques. When X2 is decoded, the rising and falling edges of channel a are counted, and the number of pulses counted per revolution is doubled, so the resolution of the encoder is doubled. Using X4 decoding, the rising and falling edges of channels a and b are counted along the river, thereby increasing the resolution by a factor of four.


Industrial Ethernet encoder speed measurement may be affected by various equipment errors, including instrument errors, phase errors, and interpolation errors.


The instrument error includes the mechanical defect of the encoder and the scale error of the encoder or cross hair. Errors related to the instrument include the flatness of the substrate, the positioning accuracy of the sensor, and whether the concentricity of the encoder and the motor shaft is consistent.


Phase error is caused by the loss of information transmission between pulses or readings. The quadrature encoder only reads the signal edges on one or two channels (A and B), and does not transmit information between these readings. The phase error is only 1/2 of the fixed measurement step size or count.


Only when the encoder resolution exceeds the inherent X4 decoding electronic level of the quadrature encoder, interpolation errors will occur. The interpolation error increases as the speed of the encoder increases. By using an encoder with more rows or more windows, interpolation and phase errors can be reduced.
